Gemini IV. On June 3, 1965, Edward White became the first American to walk in space. He floated out of this spacecraft's right hatch. His commander, James McDivitt, remained in the left seat, piloting the spacecraft. White's spacewalk came two months after Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov performed the same feat. The two-astronaut Gemini was NASA’s second human spacecraft. It was derived from the Mercury capsule made by the same company, McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis, Missouri. The Gemini program's purpose was to develop all the techniques needed to go to the Moon.
