According to this stone monuyment, there was a John Ellis in the Twelfth Illinois Cavalry who was killed at Gettysburg: http://gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/union-monuments/illinois/12th-illinois-cavalry/
---
Kathleen Ellis says: As I recall Mom's stories about our relative from Arkansas who was a major in the confederate army, one of his brothers also went to Arkansas from Vermont and then on to Chicago, Illinois.
---
John Ellis: The geneaology has this person who moved to Arkansas:

Henry Martin Ellis was born on 10 Aug 1836 in Vermont, USA, died on 27 Mar 1868 in Marion, Crittendon, Arkansas, USA at age 31, and was buried in 1868. Henry married Laura Hinds_or_hines1 on 22 Mar 1866 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Laura died in Jan 1870.

who would have been of the right age to be an officer in the Civil War. But he had 7 siblings, none named John Ellis.
---
Kathleen Ellis: According to Mom, Henry was a POW at Rock Island, Illinois. She always said that she had letters from him to his siblings in Vermont. Also, she said that his siblings bought their way out of serving in the war because of Henry's service for the confederacy.

I think the one who went to Chicago is somehow connected to Benjamin, the father of that odd guy who came to Dad's memorial service.
